The pursuit of happyness

Shane and I had a very interesting conversation over dinner the other night where we talked about our views on happiness, the abstract concept of "utility" and why we both consciously choose to live a high-paced/challenging lifestyle. A very good question that came up during our talk was:

"What do you think is harder? Figuring out what makes you happy in life? Or actually doing it?"

Thoughts?

  1. Maybe somewhere in between. For me the most difficult thing is knowing that I absolutely want two mutually exclusive things, knowing that both will make my life very fulfilling and the lack of either will always leave a void in my heart, and not knowing if I've ever made the right choice or knowing how to even come close to striking the right balance.

But I think in general figuring out what really makes you happy is more difficult. Most people aren't self-reflective enough (including me); sometimes we settle for good enough that makes me happy enough and not really the best. But then I guess the best isn't a necessity for happiness either.
